Do your eyes feel heavy after a long day at work? Do you find yourself rubbing your eyelids, blinking repeatedly or struggling to focus after spending hours on your phone or laptop?
Tired eyes are usually eyes that have been working harder than they should, most often because of long screen hours, dryness or glasses that no longer suit them.
This kind of tiredness generally eases with rest and a few changes in daily habits.
What Do Tired Eyes Feel Like?
Patients describe tired eyes in many ways:
- A heavy, dragging feeling in the eyelids
- Burning, grittiness or a sandy sensation
- Watering, even though the eyes feel dry
- Blurred vision that clears after blinking or resting
- Difficulty refocusing from a screen to something far away
- A dull ache around the eyes, temples or forehead
- Sensitivity to bright light
These symptoms tend to build through the day and ease after a night’s sleep.
Tired Eyes Causes: The Everyday Reasons
Cause | Why it tires the eyes | A clue it may be the reason |
Long screen use | Fewer blinks and hours of fixed close focus | Worse by evening, better on holidays |
Dry eye | An unstable tear film leaves the eye surface irritated | Burning or grittiness, worse in air-conditioned rooms |
Outdated or uncorrected glasses | The eyes keep straining to sharpen the image | Squinting, headaches after reading or driving |
Presbyopia (age-related near-vision change) | The eye’s lens loses its ability to focus up close, usually from the 40s | Holding the phone or menu further away |
Poor sleep | The eye surface does not recover overnight | Heaviness on waking, puffy lids |
Allergies | Inflammation of the eyelids and the eye surface | Itching, sneezing, seasonal pattern |
Poor lighting or glare | The eyes work harder against reflections and low contrast | Discomfort mainly in one room or at one desk |
Most people have more than one of these at the same time.
Why Do Screens Leave Your Eyes Feeling So Heavy?
Screens tire the eyes in four ways:
- Blinking drops. People blink about half as often while looking at a screen, so the tear film dries between blinks.
- The focus stays fixed. The focusing muscle inside the eye holds one close distance for hours.
- Glare and contrast. A bright screen in a dim room, or reflections on the display, add to the effort.
- Posture. A screen placed too high widens the eye opening and speeds up drying.
Why Do Your Eyes Feel Heavy and Tired All the Time?
When your eyes feel heavy and tired all the time, even on days with little screen use, an underlying eye condition is more likely.
Dry Eye Disease
Long-term dryness is one of the most common reasons for constant heaviness.
It often starts with blocked oil glands along the eyelid margin, which let tears evaporate too quickly.
Eyelid Problems
Inflamed eyelid margins (blepharitis) cause gritty, heavy lids that are often worse in the morning.
Excess eyelid skin or a drooping upper eyelid can also make the eyes feel heavy and the field of vision feel smaller.
Eye Coordination Problems
Some people have difficulty turning both eyes inward for close work.
Reading becomes tiring quickly, and words may seem to move or double after a while.
Thyroid Eye Disease
Thyroid conditions can cause puffy, gritty, staring eyes that feel tired and heavy, sometimes before the thyroid problem itself is diagnosed.
Cataracts and Other Eye Conditions
An early cataract can cause glare and haziness that make the eyes work harder, especially at night.
In people with diabetes, fluctuating blood sugar can make vision blur and sharpen through the day, which is tiring in itself.

8 Ways You Can Get Rid of Tired Eyes
Knowing how to get rid of tired eyes starts with changing the habits that tire them.
- Follow the 20-20-20 rule. Every 20 minutes, look at something about 20 feet (6 metres) away for 20 seconds.
- Blink fully. Make a conscious habit of complete blinks during long screen sessions.
- Set up the screen correctly. Keep it about an arm’s length away, slightly below eye level, with brightness matched to the room.
- Use lubricating eye drops for dryness. Preservative-free drops are better if you need them several times a day.
- Try warm compresses. A warm, clean cloth on closed eyelids for a few minutes helps the oil glands flow.
- Update your glasses. Old power, or reading glasses used for computer work, is a common hidden cause.
- Protect sleep. Stop screens some time before bed and aim for regular sleep hours.
- Send children outdoors. Outdoor time breaks up near work and is linked to a lower risk of myopia.
Blue-light glasses are not the answer for most people. A 2023 Cochrane review of 17 trials found no short-term benefit from blue-light filtering lenses in reducing eye strain from computer use.
When Should Tired Eyes Be Checked?
Book an eye examination if | Seek urgent eye care if |
Tiredness lasts more than a couple of weeks despite breaks | An eyelid suddenly droops |
You need to hold things further away to read | You develop double vision |
Headaches follow reading or screen work | Vision blurs suddenly and does not clear |
Your eyes feel gritty or burn most days | The eye is painful and red, with headache or nausea |
You have diabetes or a thyroid condition | Heaviness comes with sudden numbness, slurred speech or facial weakness |
A suddenly drooping eyelid or new double vision can come from a nerve or brain problem, and needs same-day medical attention.
What an Eye Examination at AKIO Checks
Persistent tiredness rarely has a single cause, so the examination looks at the whole eye:
- Vision and glasses power, for distance and near
- Focusing and eye coordination, especially for close work
- The tear film and eyelid margins, to identify dry eye and blepharitis
- Eye pressure
- A dilated retina check with scans and imaging, which also shows the effects of diabetes or high blood pressure on the eye
If a week of regular breaks, better sleep and lubricating drops has not helped, the next step is an eye examination, not stronger drops or a new pair of blue-light glasses.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why do my eyes feel heavy in the morning?
Morning heaviness often points to dryness overnight, inflamed eyelid margins, allergies or poor sleep. If it happens most days, have the eyelids and tear film examined.
Can tired eyes damage your eyesight?
Eye strain itself does not cause lasting damage. The cause, such as outdated glasses or dry eye, still needs correcting.
Do eye drops help tired eyes?
Lubricating drops help when dryness is the cause. Redness-relief drops are not meant for regular use and can make redness worse when stopped.
Can cataracts cause tired eyes?
Cataracts usually cause blurred vision, glare and reduced contrast rather than eye fatigue itself. However, these visual changes may make daily activities more uncomfortable.
Can lack of sleep make your eyes feel heavy?
Yes. The eye surface recovers overnight, and short sleep leaves the eyes dry, puffy and heavy the next day.
Should a child with tired eyes see an eye doctor?
Yes, especially if the child rubs their eyes often, holds devices close, squints or complains of headaches. Uncorrected short-sightedness is a common reason.
