What is Corneal Transplant?

Corneal transplantation or keratoplasty is known as corneal grafting.

It is an operation designed to correct blindness resulting from corneal disease. It involves removal of the damaged or diseased cornea which is replaced by donated healthy corneal tissue (the graft) either in its entirety (penetrating keratoplasty) or in part (lamellar keratoplasty). The graft is taken from a deceased individual with not known of any diseases or other factors that may affect the viability of the donated corneal tissue.

Only the corneal tissue (and not the whole eye) donated by one person is transplanted into the diseased eye of another person who has been blinded by a corneal scar or disease.

General Questions For You

Frequently Asked Questions

If you have damaged your cornea, you must:

  • Seek immediate medical attention
  • Wear a protective shield in your eye
  • Avoid touching or rubbing your eye

Some of the common symptoms include:

  • Pain or discomfort
  • Redness
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Excessive tearing
  • Blurred vision

The human cornea is comprised of six different cell layers:

  • Epithelium: Outermost layer of the cornea that prevents harmful objects from entering the eye and absorbs nutrients and oxygen from the tears to give a smooth layer.
  • Bowman’s Layer: Exists under the Epithelium and is composed of protein fibres known as Collagen.
  • Stroma: Made of water and collagen, and provides strength, flexibility and structure to the cornea.
  • Dua’s Layer: This is the thinnest layer pf the cornea, and is recently discovered.
  • Descemet’s Membrane: This layer keeps the infections and injuries away from the inner layer of the eye.
  • Endothelium: This is the innermost layer which maintains clear cornea by pumping excess fluid from the stroma.

Some common Corneal diseases are:

  • Keratitis: This is caused by bacteria, fungi or parasites that dry the surface of the eye.
  • Corneal Ectasia: This is caused by complications in surgeries like LASIK or corneal transplant and changes the shape of the cornea.
  • Corneal Dystrophy: This is a genetic disorder in which there’s an abnormal transfer of proteins or fluid in the cornea.
  • Corneal Abrasion: This is an open wound on the cornea which leads to blurry vision, pain and watery eyes.

Comprehensive eye exams help diagnose corneal diseases. These include:

  • Slit lamp exam
  • Fluorescein eye test

Several risks that may cause corneal diseases include:

  • Eye infection
  • Eye injury or trauma
  • Medical conditions in the eye
  • Genetic conditions

Many corneal diseases can be managed through prescription eye drops or medications. In a severe or advanced case, treatments may be required, such as:

  • Laser treatment
  • Corneal transplant surgery
  • Artificial cornea

Corneal diseases can’t always be fully prevented, but there are ways to lower the risk, such as:

  • Using safety goggles around harmful chemicals
  • Using protective eyewear for sports
  • Maintaining proper care of contact lens
  • Consulting an eye specialist from time to time
  • C3R treatment: This is a non-surgical procedure that treats Keratoconus.
  • Use of spectacles/contact lenses: This corrects refractive problems and protects the cornea in early disease stages.

Surgical procedures:

  • ICL (Implantable Collamer Lens): The Lens is inserted in the eye between the iris and the natural lens to correct severe refractive errors.
  • Corneal transplant: This surgery replaces the damaged cornea with a healthy donor cornea in severe cases.

A cornea transplant is a surgery that replaces the damaged cornea with a healthy donor cornea when the damage is severe. This helps in improving vision, relieving pain, and treating severe eye infections.

No, a cornea transplant either removes the entire thickness or some thickness of the damaged cornea and replaces it with a healthy donor cornea.

After undergoing cornea treatment, the following pointers are to be kept in mind:

  • Avoid rubbing your eyes
  • Avoid heavy physical exertion
  • Avoid smoke/dust
  • Wear sunglasses if you have sensitive eyes

From experienced doctors to courteous staff.. everyone is so professional and caring. I went for routine checkup only and was really impressed how they took care of every query. My eyes were throughly checked by 4 different doctors and everyone was so humble to answer my queries to utmost satisfaction. Not to mention they took really good care of my mom and saved her eye to which other hospital refused treatment. I would strongly recommend to visit them. My mom’s case was worst and I am glad I contacted them. Thank you very much for your hospitality.

This one is gonna be slightly detailed. To start off, I can simply say that this institution is by far is one of the most well managed place in the country. The entire staff, nurses and doctors are impeccable and polite. We visited the hospital for my mother’s eye surgery for (retina detachment) and everything went smoothly and can simply say it was the best decision we took. The matters of eye are intricate and I personally don’t think any other place would’ve handled the case with such ease. From scheduling the surgery, to operation to post op care, all was great. This is not just my opinion but almost every other patient we came across and spoke to. Dr Atul a big thanks to you and your team for helping thousands of people see things again.

We met doctor Bharat , he is very sweet and genuinely expalained everything about my dad's conditions. MY DAD IS PRETTY MUCH SATISFIED . Also staff memebers are very welcoming and sweet.Overall, the ambiance is good. However, the only thing I feel is lacking is the reception area lighting, which is very bright. It was irritating for my dad and some other patients as well. As an eye center, the interior should be dimmer. Just a genuine suggestion.

front office staff and floor supervisors are very helpful. Even though there is a lot of rush and then waiting, but you will get the best treatment here. They understand your issues very well and great treatment is provided. AKIO is highly affordable as we see them not turning back any patient just because of financial issues. Great work by all. Thank you once again. Keep up this great work.

It’s an eye hospital in Safdarjung enclave. Has two floors. They also have a skin center. They do quite intensive tests for eyes using modern technologies. The staff is nice, speak politely, is helpful and services well. Dr Atul Kumar is ex HoD AIIMS and is quite good. He is a retina specialist. Consultation is Rs 1000. OCT is 3500 rs. Series of tests are performed. Then consultation is done. They have washrooms on all floors, which are neat and clean. Water dispensers are also placed. There are changing rooms for both males and females. There is a small lounge with tea, coffee and snacks on payment. There is a small pharmacy desk. A small shoppe for frames and lens too. The treatment charges are seemingly on the higher side. Like for a cataract and lens they charge 65000 rs for one eye with Ayance lens.Couple of things I ddnt appreciate- admonishing the previous doctors & condemning them. Quoting different prices by staff for the same treatment or tests. Creating anxiety & urgency for treatment. Patient needs to absorb and think and decide.
