What is a Glaucoma? Can it harm my eyesight?

Glaucoma, also known as “kala motia” occurs when the optic nerve which connects your eye to the brain gets damaged. This might lead to vision loss or blindness. It can be found in people of all ages but it is most commonly seen among older adults.

Should I be worried about getting Glaucoma?

Anyone can get Glaucoma, but following people have a higher chance.

  • Age over 40 years
  • Have a family history
  • Had an eye injury
  • Have a high IOP/ have a high pressure inside your eye
  • Suffer from diabetes
  • Have myopia

You might be at a higher risk for Glaucoma.

It’s important to note that a diabetic patient is at a higher risk of developing glaucoma, so it is advised to get a screening for glaucoma.

If you have any of these risk factors, schedule a regular eye exam with a glaucoma specialist in Delhi. A quick search for “glaucoma test near me” can help you schedule an appointment at a glaucoma eye hospital and detect glaucoma early.

Can I tell if I have Glaucoma? Are there any warning signs?

Glaucoma doesn’t show symptoms at first. But depending on its type, it can develop in different ways:

1. Open-angle Glaucoma (most common):

You might not notice anything at first. But over time, you might have:

  • Blind spots on the side of your eye.
  • Problems seeing straight ahead.

2. Acute angle-closure glaucoma (emergency):

This is a serious situation. Look out for:

  • Sudden and intense headaches
  • Eye pain
  • Nausea
  • Blurred vision
  • Rainbow halos around lights
  • Red, irritated eye.

If you have any of these symptoms, go to a doctor right away!

3. Normal-Tension Glaucoma:

Just like open-angle glaucoma, this might also not show any signs early on.
But over time, you might:

  • Get a blurry vision.
  • Lose peripheral (side) vision

4. Glaucoma in Children:

This is less common. But a child may:

  • Have a cloudy, dull-looking eye.
  • Experience excessive blinking or tears

5. Pigmentary Glaucoma:

This type might lead to:

  • Halos around lights.
  • Blurred vision.
  • Loss of peripheral (side) vision

If Glaucoma doesn’t show any symptoms at first, how will I know if I have it?

Glaucoma may not show any symptoms at first. Before you notice that you have it, you lose a lot of vision. This is why it’s important to have regular eye exams once you turn 40 to catch glaucoma before it steals your sight.

How often should I schedule eye exams to stay ahead of glaucoma?

To catch glaucoma before it gets serious, it is advised to get your eyes checked from time to time, depending on factors like:

  1. Family member with glaucoma: If one of your family members has glaucoma, it is advised to get your eyes checked after every 1-2 years.
  2. Diagnosed with glaucoma: If you are diagnosed with glaucoma, it is advised to get your eyes checked every 3-6 months.
  3. During infancy or childhood: Even if there are no symptoms and the eyes appear normal, it is advised to get a routine check-up for children at the age of 3-4 years before they start school.

How will my eyes be tested for Glaucoma?

There are various tests for Glaucoma diagnosis, such as:

  • Tonometry: This helps examine your eye pressure or IOP.
  • Vision testing: This helps determine your eye power, with the help of an eye chart.
  • Ophthalmoscopy: This dilated eye exam tests your retina and the optic nerve.
  • Perimetry: This test helps determine your field of vision.
  • Gonioscopy: This test checks if your eye’s drainage is blocked.
  • Pachymetry: This test checks the thickness of your cornea.
  • OCT: This test measures the thickness of the nerve fiber layer.

How can I get my Glaucoma treated?

Although kala motia treatment cannot solve the damage already caused, it can certainly help reduce the effects of glaucoma.

First, if your eye pressure is high, it is lowered in the following ways:

  1.     Use of Prescription Eye Drops: These are used in the beginning and work by increasing fluid drainage or reducing fluid production in the eye.
  2.     Use of Medicines: Sometimes, oral medications are used alongside eye drops for additional pressure control.
  3.     Through Laser Treatment: In some cases, a laser procedure can create tiny drainage channels in the eye to help excess fluid flow out.
  4.     With Glaucoma Filtering Microsurgery: This is a more advanced option where a surgeon creates an opening in the eye to allow fluid to drain more efficiently, and reduce eye pressure.

Can Glaucoma be cured completely?

As of now, glaucoma cannot be cured completely. The treatments that are currently available cannot reverse the damage already caused by the disease. However, there are effective ways to manage glaucoma and prevent further vision loss if it is detected in time.

General Questions For You

Frequently Asked Questions

Lifestyle changes like maintaining a healthy weight, keeping your blood pressure under control, avoiding smoking, and staying physically active can reduce the effects of Glaucoma.

Yes, a diet that includes fruits, vegetables, fish, and whole-grain foods can reduce blood pressure, which further reduces the risk of Glaucoma.

On the other hand, a poor diet may lead to high cholesterol and diabetes, which further increases the risk of getting Glaucoma.

The nerve fiber layer in your eye is a sensory neuron that carries signals from your eye to your brain.

If Glaucoma is not diagnosed and treated in an early stage, it may lead to blindness.

Glaucoma affects your peripheral or side vision before your central vision. The effects of Glaucoma on the vision are gradual and may not be noticeable until your vision is lost to an irreversible point.

Determining the best glaucoma treatment depends on individual factors like the type and severity of your glaucoma, as well as your overall health. At our hospital, we have a team of experienced ophthalmologists specializing in glaucoma treatment. We offer a comprehensive range of treatment options, including prescription eye drops, laser procedures, and microsurgery.

AKIO offers a comprehensive range of options, making us a leading choice for the best glaucoma treatment in Delhi.

Increased eye pressure does not necessarily mean glaucoma, as whether or not your eye pressure is high depends on how much your optic nerve can handle it, which varies for every individual.

If you experience the following symptoms, it is wise to get yourself tested for Glaucoma:

  • Blurry vision
  • Loss of peripheral vision
  • Sudden and intense headaches
  • Eye pain or redness
  • Problems seeing straight ahead

The Laser peripheral iridotomy (LPI) may help lower the intraocular pressure in the eye but it will not reverse Glaucoma entirely as it is a chronic disease that requires treatment from time to time.

Laser surgery is done by putting numbing drops in the eye, then putting a high-intensity beam of light which helps in improving the fluid drainage from the eye. This procedure is often painless with little to no discomfort.

No, vision lost by glaucoma cannot be restored, but treatments can help the vision from getting worse.

Driving is generally not recommended for Glaucomic patients, although it highly depends on the type of Glaucoma. This is because people with Glaucoma may have troubles adjusting to different levels of light, trouble seeing far ahead, may see blurry and experience difficulties seeing during the night.

Exercises like aerobics, walking, or swimming can actually be beneficial for people with glaucoma. However, goggles are recommended to protect your eyes from chlorine or other chemicals in the pool.

However, strenuous activities or exercises must be avoided as they can cause sudden spikes in IOP. This includes heavy weightlifting, straining, or holding your breath for long periods.

If you have any concerns or experience any eye pain or discomfort while swimming, talk to your ophthalmologist.

Glaucoma drops can be put by the following ways:

  • Looking at the ceiling
  • Pulling your lower eyelid
  • Holding the bottle upside down with the other hand
  • Squeeze the bottle to instill eye drops

From experienced doctors to courteous staff.. everyone is so professional and caring. I went for routine checkup only and was really impressed how they took care of every query. My eyes were throughly checked by 4 different doctors and everyone was so humble to answer my queries to utmost satisfaction. Not to mention they took really good care of my mom and saved her eye to which other hospital refused treatment. I would strongly recommend to visit them. My mom’s case was worst and I am glad I contacted them. Thank you very much for your hospitality.

This one is gonna be slightly detailed. To start off, I can simply say that this institution is by far is one of the most well managed place in the country. The entire staff, nurses and doctors are impeccable and polite. We visited the hospital for my mother’s eye surgery for (retina detachment) and everything went smoothly and can simply say it was the best decision we took. The matters of eye are intricate and I personally don’t think any other place would’ve handled the case with such ease. From scheduling the surgery, to operation to post op care, all was great. This is not just my opinion but almost every other patient we came across and spoke to. Dr Atul a big thanks to you and your team for helping thousands of people see things again.

We met doctor Bharat , he is very sweet and genuinely expalained everything about my dad's conditions. MY DAD IS PRETTY MUCH SATISFIED . Also staff memebers are very welcoming and sweet.Overall, the ambiance is good. However, the only thing I feel is lacking is the reception area lighting, which is very bright. It was irritating for my dad and some other patients as well. As an eye center, the interior should be dimmer. Just a genuine suggestion.

They understand your issues very well and great treatment is provided. AKIO is highly affordable as we see them not turning back any patient just because of financial issues. Great work by all. Thank you once again. Keep up this great work.

It’s an eye hospital in Safdarjung enclave. Has two floors. They also have a skin center. They do quite intensive tests for eyes using modern technologies. The staff is nice, speak politely, is helpful and services well. Dr Atul Kumar is ex HoD AIIMS and is quite good. He is a retina specialist. Consultation is Rs 1000. OCT is 3500 rs. Series of tests are performed. Then consultation is done. They have washrooms on all floors, which are neat and clean. Water dispensers are also placed. There are changing rooms for both males and females. There is a small lounge with tea, coffee and snacks on payment. There is a small pharmacy desk. A small shoppe for frames and lens too. The treatment charges are seemingly on the higher side. Like for a cataract and lens they charge 65000 rs for one eye with Ayance lens.Couple of things I ddnt appreciate- admonishing the previous doctors & condemning them. Quoting different prices by staff for the same treatment or tests. Creating anxiety & urgency for treatment. Patient needs to absorb and think and decide.
